Young Lori Anderson (Sara Jessica Parker) lost her father in a plane crash. While her mother tries to put her life back in order, Lori falls apart. One day, a client coming to see about the boarding of his house crashes his plane. His best friend manages to escape tragedy, but the client, Terry Stockton, dies in the accident. Lori, however, can see and actually touch the supposedly dead Terry after she finds him in the woods. With the aid of her father's journals and Terry's best friend, they try to find out why Terry's spirit hasn't crossed over. A complication then develops in the situation when Lori and Terry begin to fall for each other.
A manly trucker decides to make his gentle son more macho by taking him on a hunting trip in this family drama. They spend much of their vacation camped out in a honkytonk bar where the lad soon experiences stirrings of manhood when he falls in love with a world-wise waitress (Maureen McCormick).
