 Although there is a normal side to Shinji's life, home and classroom prove no less of a battleground: a fight for his live-in commanding officer, Misato, to treat him like family instead of an experimental subject; and a fight to convince a hostile classmate as to why he must do a job Shinji himself doesn't like.
Having won some peace in his life for the moment, Shinji now turns to ponder his fellow Eva pilot, a girl who seems even more withdrawn than himself; the pale, beautiful, and remote Rei Ayanami.
