Joonha is a normal, healthy boy of sixteen who has cruised through life without too many problems. Born into a shaman family, Sunbi has inherited the power to see and communicate with spirits just like her grandmother, a notable shaman and savior of their little fishing village in the South Sea. Her powers make her the amorous target of hedonistic demons even as a child. Long shielded from the reality of her power, she finally learns the secret of her mother's death, and why her grandmother was never able to leave their village.

With her grandmother gone, Sunbi experiences the twin pains of loss and loneliness. The daily challenges of living with her father's unfamiliar family, while coping with hostile classmates and teachers, are just the tip of the iceberg. There is a harder struggle waging inside, for Sunbi is left to learn about the eerie world of the unseen demons, gods, and spirits all alone.

Sunbi's descent into darkness continues. In a rainy forest, she tries to lure out dokebis in the hope of enlisting their aid. Knowing a dokebi weakness is the inability to clean themselves, she throws paint on one and offers to clean him in exchange for his help. At first he laughs, but when she refuses to back down, he flees.

Now the jealous dokebi, Gwangsoo, visits Sunbi at any time calling her his bride. Sunbi, however, suddenly asks her classmate Taehoon out for no apparent reason. Evil spirits begin to cling to her, weighing her down. Gwangsoo gathers other dokebis to try to unglue the spirits. A chance meeting with the eccentric Professor Kim may reveal help she never expected.

She takes shelter at night in Internet cafes and saunas and eventually finds lodging and a job as a waitress. Meanwhile, Gwangsoo is desperate to find his beloved Sunbi. Upon arriving at her father's house, however, he meets a mysterious young man who also claims Sunbi as his bride!
