Getting Along in Japanese DVD 10: A Wedding Ceremony (D) LiveAction

Getting Along in Japanese is a DVD video learning series which presents the Japanese language through familiar daily situations. The setting is a traditional Japanese inn where the hosts teach their guests to communicate using practical and current expressions.

Hosts Katsuya Kobayashi and Kaori Itakura introduce spoken Japanese through carefully dramatized skits designed to help beginning students learn to cope with everyday life in modern Japan.

Episode Ten is the final program of Getting Along In Japanese. In the skit, a young woman seeks the advice of a neighbor on how to give a gift to a friend who is getting married. The neighbor explains the common rituals for giving gifts or cash at a wedding ceremony.

New grammatical structures are introduced to encourage students to express themselves with more variety in the Japanese language. More new vocabulary is also presented. Mr. Kobayashi then invites two students for a special lesson on counting numbers in Japanese, which is quite new and different for English-speakers.

Kaori then shows photos of the many types of ceremonial envelopes used for giving cash on auspicious occasions, she explains how to distinguish which envelope is correct for each type of occasion.

Each DVD can be viewed straight through or in separate chapters, allowing access to individual segments for helpful repetition and easy learning.
