Set in sixteenth-century Japan, a period of bloody civil war, Ugetsu is equally rooted in the postwar psyche of 1950s Japan. Focusing on an ambitious potter haunted by a beautiful ghost and a farmer who dreams of becoming a samurai, Ugetsu offers a commentary on the delusions of lust and power, the folly of war, and the stoic suffering of women.

People are talking about the worldwide phenomenon of crop circles - huge designs that have been appearing in farmers' fields for more than twenty years, patterns that grow larger and more complex with each passing season.

The story begins when Por wakes up in hospital after being brutally beaten by a drug dealer to find herself going to give birth. Frightened and confused, Por finds herself confronting strange and disturbing events. She hears the weird voice of a child, she can't see but whose doll moves around by it. She also has to deal with the appearance of a mysterious woman who she has never met before.

Residents of a remote town have become inexplicably become obsessed with spiral shapes. Kirie, a young schoolgirl, first notices this phenomena when she encounters her boyfriend's father, maniacally videotaping a snail crawling up a wall. Later, her brooding beau, Shuichi, reveals that the odd behavior goes further - his father has filled an entire room with various spiral objects. Before long, this growing madness leads to a series of gruesome and unbelievably bizarre deaths.
