El Hazard OVA Boxed Set (Original Vol. 1-4) DVD (Hyb)
AJ J. Lancaster - Jun 2 2003 Guyver469@Hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! If you like Inu Yasha You'll like El Hazard El hazard the Magnificent world, is just as its title proclaims. A great Story that revolves around Comedy and Combat, now don't go thinking this is another dragonball cause its not. This is released by the same people whom made The Tenchi Muyo! series, which if you liked that then you get the point. El hazard is a story surrounding the tale of average everyday Student Makoto Mizuhara and his self proclaimed rival Katsuhiko Jinnai-gotta love the laugh- and their sudden trip to the Mysterious world of el hazard. full of no holds berred comedy and fluid combat scenes it also retains a romance story revolving around 3 said characters(come on you can't expect me to say can you). But to give it a ctrue comparison to another series it is in teh beggining at least similar to the story the great story of the half-demon inu yasha. in which the character Kagome falls into a well and ends up in feudal Japan, whereas Makoto ends up in another world entirely, well him and Jinnai both of them-i didn't mention his sister nanami did i?- and finally there is Masamichi Fujisawa-the drunken man!- he is their school teacher, whom has a *clears throat* taste for the alchohol. Oh and did i mention that all of them get special powers when they arrive in this world-if you think power rangers i will have to bludgeon you lol- well i believe i have given a decent idea to whomever is reading this what kinda stuff they have instore for them. well probably not but hey, its your fault for not just buying it and figuring it out on your own. well i loved it thought it was hilarious. there is 3 OAV's El hazard and el hazard 2, and El hazard Alternative World and one TV series called Wanderers joe h. lament - Jun 13 2003 zach0701@comcast.net Rating: Wonderful! don't think Well AJ here pretty much summed up the story (could use a little more work). If you dont want to figure out any mind bending philisophical messages, this is great. A love story that is by no means a girls show, good battle scenes (and plenty of them), hilarious comedy, sex crazed lesbians, and plenty of booze and cigarettes (fugisawa, you're a god). Plus more than enough fan service to keep an Evangelion fan happy! J R - Jun 19 2003 Rating: Wonderful! A lovely series! This is a really great series, I love every character in this OVA & the plot and well EVERYTHING is beautiful. What I didn't like is that it's overpriced for having only 11 episodes, Id sell it for only $50 or less. But aside that it's extremly great and if you watch it you'll love it too especially Fatora & Alielle and their little "adventures". But my fav. is Miz Mishtal(the Water Priestess). Anthony J. Bennett - Jan 31 2005 Rating: Wonderful! A timeless classic El Hazard the Magnificent world OVA is a timeless parody of the entire sci-fi genre. Brief plot introduction: Makoto Mizuhara is an average high school student and jack of all traits. He unknowingly one ups the high strung high school president and long time friend Katsuhiko Jinnai to the point that Jinnai snaps. Worse, Makoto has evidence that Katsuhiko bought off the election, so Jinnai decides to put Makoto on ice. Using a very cleaver ploy, Jinnai lures his life long rival to the school after hours and kicks his plan to isolate Makoto till things settle down. It would have suceeded if it wasn't for Makoto's high skill rating in dumb luck. At the very moment that was Jinnai's triumph, the world froze. Makoto heard noises coming from the anchient ruins recently discovered in the schools basement. Investigating, Makoto discovers a beautiful woman who talks as though she's known him for over 10,000 years... literally. She sends Makoto, and everyone else at the school, to a strange world... El Hazard. This includes Makoto's drunken lush of teacher (and captain of the Mountain Climbing club) Fujisawa, and Jinnai's financially resourceful sister Nanami. What follows is a madcap whirlwind adventure as the four off-worlders interact in world of princesses, priestesses, bugs, shaddow assassins, ultimate weapons, lesbians, and demon gods (you know... the standard anime fare) and discover talents they never knew they had. Other Qualities: The El Hazard Magnificent World OVA was artistically speaking an important anime work. The background work is breathtaking. Incredible landscaping and sky hues make El Hazard visually identifiable. Alien architecture seems to blend Middle Eastern influence with a touch of high techy mechanics. The clothing designs are wonderful with plenty of costume ideas. The characters have a glossy look to them with incredible detail at times. Visually, I have only two complaints in El Hazard. With as much detail as they put in, they still cheat quite often with repeating backgrounds and low quality action frames, but the humor of the action scenes tends to make up for it. The important question: Dub or Subbed? Well, it's a pioneer dub which means you can pretty much count on a condescending performance, but for being one it's pretty good. Makoto and Nanami's voices are almost unbearably plastic at times and seems to be written in to connect the dots for idiot viewers, but the dub Jinnai and Fujisawa are excellent and outperform their japanese counterparts. I believe this anime is one to watch both ways, as a few of the jokes thrown into the dub are too good to miss. Final Statements: You'll fall in love with the OVA. In terms of mad cap comedy adventures it still ranks high in my book and is in many ways the equivalent to "The Princess Bride" in terms of lovable characters. A previous reviewer complained about the price, but frankly it's a steal compared to what I paid for the laserdisc release of the 7 magnificent world episodes. And while they complain it's too much for 11 episodes, episodes 1 and 7 are double length, making it more like 13 episodes. J Green - Jul 1 2007 zrdb2003@yahoo.com Rating: Wonderful! One of the best fantasy series out there. This is one of those series where the dub is much better than the japanese track. Only problem is that this set is way overpriced. Thank goodness Geneon is re-releasing the originial dvds one at a time at a much lower price. j Green - May 8 2008 Rating: Wonderful! Get it now........ As before-I very highly recommend this series-as it's short it doesn't take a ton of time to watch, the dub is among the best I've ever heard (wait until you hear Jinnai's evil laugh). As Geneon went south of the border-get it now or forever hold your peace. |
