Voices of a Distant Star DVD (Hyb)
Marcus C. Cooper - Jun 16 2003 Skanarchyteke@hotmail.com Rating: Pretty good! WOW! Sad but Beautiful. Well the only reason that Voices of a Distant Star got a pretty good, was because it was only 30 minutes long. But to it's credit at least the director didn't waste our time by dragging it out over 2 hours or 4 DVD's. Very beautifully done, it tugged at my heart and I had genuine concern for the two characters, and the stuggle to keep their love alive. As much as I enjoy mech battles in space, I quickly wanted to forget about the battles and go back to the love story, and see how the two main characters dealt with their seperation. Also from what I understand this movie is one of the directors first attempts at an anime, if this is true then we need to look out. I see nothing but more and greater productions from this man. I give Voices of a Distant Star. 3 1/2 out of 4. Hakeem Y. Ali-Bocas - Jul 5 2003 Zionmaster01@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! Wonderful!!! This totally blew me away. I figured I just wasted 18 bucks buying a 30 minute anime but man I was wrong! This 30 minutes is better than some entire t.v series that ive seen, and ive seen alot. If this doesnt have you choking back some tears by the end of it i don't know what will. The story moves so quickly and there is so much emotion it seems longer than it really is. I wish it could have been longer, but it really didn't need to be either. It was just so good I wanted more. will d. a - Jul 8 2003 koolaid2622@hotmail.com Rating: "Okay." interesting if you like revolutionary animation and nise character designs along with bad ass mecks and action this is for you. but if you hate drama and love stories that unfortunately destroy the cool action scenes this is definitely noe for you.i mean dont get me wrong i liked it but it was kind of melodramatic. enjoy will.......................................................... Jason E. Huff - Jul 31 2003 jhuff@theanimereview.com Rating: Wonderful! One of the best anime ever created... Voices Of A Distant Star is the kind of show that makes people stand up and take notice. It's a short film, obviously, and some people will argue over the price for a 30 minute show. But it's worth it. After watching anime for over 18 years now and running a review site, I've seen the cream of the crop, the trashiest junk, and everything between. Believe me when I say that this stands with "Wings of Honneamise", "Akira", "Macross '84", "Perfect Blue", and other magnificent entries in the anime canon. Arthur Tjia - Aug 24 2003 Rating: Wonderful! The BEST mini-drama I've EVER watched. There are many reasons why I love my copy of Hoshi no Koe [Voices of a Distant Star]: 1. ONE person was in charge of EVERYTHING from storyboard, to scripting, to drawing/animating, and finally synchronizing the animation with the audio effects. In other words, everything except voicing and doing the music. The incredible part was that he designed the cg effects and drew the characters completely on a G4 400 with professional and commercial editing programs. Truly a work to behold. 2. Nothing is more dramatic than the evolution of two people's relationship in the face of an overwhelming obstacle. The obstacle being implied by the title of the animation. If you've read the "cut-and-dried" summary that RightStuf and ADV has of the animation, you already know that communication between the two is only possible through text messaging via cellphone. Add special relativity into the mix, and you also have another problem: will the two continue to love each other as one ages (peacefully) while the other barely ages (but fights desperately for survival)? It truly pushes the question to the limit: How far will you go for the one you love? 3. Interestingly enough, after the creator finished the animation, he initially voice-acted his work with his girlfriend to test the timing. In places where the timing between mood/story/animation was off, he adjusted the animation so that it flowed more smoothly. He didn't have to edit it but he did anyway. 4. The DVD also included his other short work, "She and Her Cat" (S&HC), which is another excellent piece of work. It's hard to describe S&HC because it's one of those interesting slice-of-life drama that is rife with symbolisms of existentialism. I guess that wraps it up. Thanks for reading my rant on Hoshi no Koe. |
