Burst Angel DVD Box Set (Hyb)
Cory A. Schmidt - Feb 2 2007 Sonyfreak7@msn.com Rating: Wonderful! Fantastic Visuals This was one of the first anime series I compiled disc by disc. I found the series to be very good on the whole. What drives this series is the art and character design. They blend CG with the cells perfectly and make seemless transitions. Ugetsu Hakua was the character artist of the series and did a fantastic job on the designs. The storyline is not bad either, keeping you fairly intrigued. Burst Angel also has one of the best filler episodes I've seen. The fight scenes are pretty cool, also. The only downfall is that sometimes they inject too much drama into some scenes, making you uneasy. Matt Weinell - Apr 4 2008 Rating: Not all that good. Beautiful visuals betrayed by cheap tricks. I saw several music videos featuring this show and was duly impressed by the gorgeous visuals. As soon as it was on sale here, I picked it up. Unfortunately, I was severely disapointed by the stereotypical characters and cheap fanservice. A basic plot developed early, most anime watchers are familiar with "Harem" storylines - one naive boy surrounded by sexy/intelligent/rich females. This was a familiar setup so I was expecting the boy to be the focus of the show. After finishing it, I can honestly say that I have no idea who the story was about. One is led to believe that Jo is the focus of the show but she is the only (and I mean ONLY) character who exhibits zero character development. Imagine a superhuman Rei (from NGE). Now make her even more apathetic. Not a very interesting character. Many recent titles have a disturbing tendency to mix slapstick comedy and serious action together seemingly at random. Burst Angel is the epitome of that statement. Is there a monster destroying a city? Hell, let's have a local drunk head butt the things fist to stop it. An evil army attacking a different city? Rally the hairy transvestites to save the day (No, that's not a joke - it actually happens). Meg's only purpose in the series is to be repeatedly captured by enemies. That is not a joke either. The only reason the storyline goes anywhere at all is because Meg is held hostage about a dozen times. Also, at 15 years old, her breasts are bigger than her head. She's also the star of the corniest episode in the series. Wahoo. Sei is the two dimensional Bruce Wayne of the series. All the money, none of the depth. Her involvement in the series is highlighted by holding her own friend hostage for absolutely no reason. Wahoo again. Amy is the token child genius. Star of the second corniest episode in the series. The actual storyline is based around hunting down artificially created monsters. You don't really find out why they were made or who made them. The art is gorgeous. I'll give the series that. If you want to see a few good fight scenes, skimpy outfits, stiff nipples, and bad dialogue (Burst Angel is the only anime I've ever watched where the English and Japanese voice acting is equally abhorent) be my guest. I wish I'd spent my money on Bubblegum Crisis 2040. |
